Rocky Creek Winery closes its doors after 20 years!
Almost to the date
For Immediate Release:
After 20 years of making award winning wines from Cowichan grapes and blackberries Rocky Creek Winery sadly announces it is closing its doors for good.
Exactly 20 years ago, Mark and Linda launched their winery when they took a ferry to Saltspring Island to purchase a grape press from a neighboring winery. This purchase was the first step in their dream to establish their winery. A few months later they had their winery license and began their long journey in the wine industry.
Over the years they had their ups and downs, mother nature presented challenges, which they overcame, sticking to their principles to only produce wines made from local fruit. They also saw some great highs – winning awards for the best fruit wine in Canada and the Pacific Northwest and the best Pinot Gris in Canada. Sadly, after years of managing a successful winery, the COVID pandemic ultimately ended their business.
While governments announced they would support the tourism sector which was hammered by the pandemic, reality was that the only help offered was in the form of loans, which offered short term relief but with skyrocketing interest rates ultimately led to interest payments that ballooned to a level that overwhelmed their dwindling resources.
The winery tasting room will be open until the Thanksgiving weekend, and will then close forever with the last day Sunday, October 13.
Mark and Linda would like to thank all the friends, family and colleagues who helped them over the past 20 years. ‘Our customers also have been a very large part in keeping our winery this long, so we will miss you also. We just never had enough of those wonderful people.’ Linda Holford, President and Sales.
Signing off! Linda and Mark
